A distinguished graduate of Deshbandhu College, University of Delhi, Prabhu Chawla commenced his professional journey as an economics lecturer at Delhi University. However, his passion for storytelling and keen interest in current affairs propelled him towards a career in journalism.

Trailblazing Editorial Roles

Chawla’s editorial journey is defined by notable positions and significant contributions. He served as the Editor-in-Chief of The New Indian Express, a prominent Chennai-based newspaper. Prior to this, he held the esteemed position of Group Editorial Director at the India Today Group until November 2010. His tenure at India Today marked a period of substantial influence, during which he not only shaped the content of language publications but also hosted the popular talk show “Seedhi Baat” on the Aaj Tak channel.

Investigative Journalism and Political Impact

A pivotal moment in Prabhu Chawla’s career unfolded when his investigative prowess led to the downfall of a government in New Delhi. His groundbreaking scoop on the controversial Jain Commission report on the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, published in India Today, compelled the Congress party to withdraw support from the United Front government. This event, in turn, precipitated the downfall of the Inder Kumar Gujral-led regime in 1997.

His talk show “Seedhi Baat” on Aaj Tak, renowned for its direct and probing interviews with prominent personalities, garnered widespread acclaim. He expanded his hosting repertoire with shows like “Teekhi Baat” on IBN7, “Sachchi Baat” on National Voice, and “Siddhi Gal” on PTC News. Throughout his television career, Chawla demonstrated his ability to captivate audiences with insightful conversations.

In 2003, he was honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan by the President of India, acknowledging his exceptional service to the field of journalism. His accolades include the Indian Television Academy Award for the Best News and Current Affairs Anchor, Sansui Television Best TV Anchor Award, and the Hero Honda-Indian Television Academy (ITA) Best Anchor award for “Seedhi Baat.”

Chawla’s accolades extend beyond the national realm, with honours like the Punjabi Icon Award in 2016 and the TSR Kalapeetham Life Time Achievement Award in 1998.
