Early Life and Educational Background

Anu Vardhan, a graduate in visual communications from Loyola College in Chennai, laid the educational groundwork for her illustrious career in costume design. Her lineage is noteworthy, being the granddaughter of the veteran Tamil actor N. S. Krishnan.

A Multifaceted Force in Filmmaking

Anu Vardhan’s cinematic journey commenced with the critically acclaimed film “The Terrorist” (1997), directed by family friend Santosh Sivan. A significant leap in her career occurred with her collaboration on “Asoka” (2001), another venture with Santosh Sivan. In this historical epic, she assumed the role of Principal Costume designer, meticulously crafting 3rd-century period costumes for leading actors Shahrukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor.

The acclaim and awards garnered for her work in “Kabali” solidified her status as a top-tier costume designer.

Building on the success of “Kabali,” her collaboration extended to director Pa. Ranjith’s subsequent film with Rajinikanth, “Kaala” (2018). Here, Anu was entrusted with dressing the actor primarily in kurtas and lungis, adhering to a black-themed wardrobe.
