Sunitha Krishnan, born in 1972, is an Indian social activist whose unwavering commitment to rescuing, rehabilitating, and reintegrating victims of sex trafficking has profoundly impacted countless lives. Her extraordinary life’s work, marked by a relentless fight against human trafficking and dedication to victims’ welfare, has earned her numerous accolades, including the prestigious Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award in 2016.
A Childhood Rooted in Service
Krishnan’s foray into social work commenced at a young age in Bangalore. By eight, she was teaching dance to mentally challenged children, and by twelve, she was running schools for underprivileged children in the slums. Tragedy struck at fifteen when she was gang-raped during a neo-literacy campaign, propelling her toward a mission to combat the darkness threatening women’s safety and dignity in India.
Educationally, Krishnan earned a Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences from St. Joseph’s College in Bangalore, followed by a Master of Social Work (MSW) with a specialisation in medical and psychiatric social work from Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore.
The Genesis of Prajwala: A Lifelong Pledge
Settling in Hyderabad, Krishnan joined the People’s Initiative Network (PIN) as a Coordinator, passionately advocating for the housing rights of slum dwellers along the Musi River. In 1996, the evacuation of sex workers from Hyderabad’s Mehboob ki Mehandi led Krishnan to establish a transition school to prevent the second generation from falling into prostitution. Prajwala, under Krishnan’s leadership, emerged as the world’s largest anti-trafficking shelter, rescuing and rehabilitating over 12,000 survivors of sex trafficking.
A Life Dedicated to Service
Beyond her work with Prajwala, Krishnan leads an economic rehabilitation program, empowering survivors with vocational skills. She runs Prajwala as a full-time volunteer, funding her efforts through writing, speeches, and seminars on trafficking. Married to filmmaker Rajesh Touchriver, Krishnan’s influence extends as an activist, educator, and mentor, inspiring her team to stay committed to their shared mission.
Champion of Policy and Legal Advocacy
Krishnan actively engages in policy-making and legal advocacy, contributing to the passage of the Policy for Rescue & Rehabilitation of Victims of Trafficking for commercial sexual exploitation in Andhra Pradesh. She played a crucial role in advising the Government of Kerala’s Nirbhaya policy in 2011, although her initial resignation due to political inertia was followed by her re-induction with enhanced decision-making power in 2015.
Her involvement in awareness campaigns and advocacy extends to the United States, where she launched the “Men Against Demand” campaign. Krishnan has harnessed media platforms, including a powerful TED India speech, appearances on Aamir Khan’s show “Satyamev Jayate,” and impactful documentaries, to amplify her message globally.
Film as a Tool for Advocacy
Venturing into filmmaking early in her career, Krishnan conceptualised documentaries and collaborated on movies like “Thira” and “Naa Bangaaru Talli,” which received international acclaim. Her films serve as powerful tools for raising awareness and advocating against trafficking.
Research and Publications
Krishnan’s commitment to research is evident in her collaboration on action research and the publication of “The Shattered Innocence.” She has authored books and manuals guiding caregivers, counsellors, and communities dealing with issues like sex trafficking, HIV/AIDS, and women’s empowerment.
Overcoming Adversity and Rising to the Challenge
Facing numerous threats and physical assaults, Krishnan’s resolve to combat human trafficking has only strengthened. She has been appointed to the Andhra Pradesh State Women’s Commission and contributed to India’s 2013 Bill on Rape, showcasing her resilience and influence in combating sexual violence.
