Arunachalam Muruganantham, fondly known as “Padman,” has become a symbol of change in rural India by revolutionising menstrual hygiene. Born in 1961 in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, Muruganantham’s journey from poverty to creating an affordable sanitary pad-making machine is not only inspiring but has also garnered global attention, leading to the production of the Bollywood film “Pad Man,” featuring Akshay Kumar.

Early Challenges and Humble Beginnings

Muruganantham’s early life was marked by financial struggles after the untimely loss of his father. To support his family, he left school at 14 and took on various jobs. These diverse experiences set the stage for his groundbreaking work later on.

Innovative Solution to a Pervasive Problem

In 1998, after marrying Shanthi, Muruganantham discovered that his wife, like many women in rural India, faced challenges due to the high cost of commercial sanitary napkins. Troubled by the unhygienic alternatives used by women, he embarked on a quest for a solution.

Initially facing rejection from his wife and sisters for his cotton-based prototypes, Muruganantham’s determination led him to experiment on himself using a makeshift sanitary pad. Despite societal ridicule, he persevered, discovering the key ingredient in commercial pads: cellulose fibres from pine bark wood pulp. The existing expensive machines prompted him to design a cost-effective one, making the entire process affordable at just ₹65,000 (US$810).

Awards, Recognition, and Social Impact

In 2006, Muruganantham’s invention received recognition, winning the National Innovation Foundation’s Grassroots Technological Innovations Award. With seed funding, he founded Jayaashree Industries, making the machines accessible to rural women across India. Despite lucrative offers from corporations, he opted to empower self-help groups run by women, ensuring the widest possible reach.

His innovation, lauded for simplicity and cost-effectiveness, has earned him numerous awards. Beyond creating jobs and income opportunities for women, it has made sanitary pads affordable, enabling women to sustain their livelihoods during menstruation. His work has inspired a wave of entrepreneurs in the menstrual hygiene domain.

Global Recognition and Cultural Impact

Muruganantham’s influence extends beyond India. He has delivered lectures at prestigious institutions globally and participated in a compelling TED talk. His life story became the subject of the documentary “Menstrual Man” and inspired the Bollywood film “Pad Man,” reaching international audiences. The documentary “Period. End of Sentence.” won the Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject) in 2018.

Arunachalam Muruganantham’s life exemplifies determination, innovation, and unwavering commitment to a social cause. His invention has not only improved the lives of countless women in India but has also propelled global awareness and progress in menstrual hygiene. His story stands as a beacon of inspiration, proving that an individual’s passion and dedication can bring about positive change on a global scale.
