Zuzana Čaputová, born on June 21, 1973, defies the conventional political mould. As a Slovak lawyer and environmental activist, she currently holds the esteemed position of the President of Slovakia. Her remarkable journey to the presidency is defined by an unwavering commitment to justice, environmental causes, and progressive values.

Early Life and Education

Born and raised in Bratislava, Slovakia, Čaputová’s upbringing in Pezinok reflected a spirit of openness. She pursued her legal education at Comenius University Faculty of Law in Bratislava, graduating in 1996. Seeking further knowledge, she completed various training programs, including “General Management – Management of Change” and the ARK – Mediation course accredited by the Ministry of Education of Slovakia.

Early Career

Post-education, Čaputová embarked on her career in the local government of Pezinok, ascending from a legal department assistant to the deputy to the town mayor. Driven by a passion for public service and justice, she transitioned to the non-profit sector, where she focused on issues related to abused and exploited children while working at the Open Society Foundations. Additionally, she contributed to local community development as a project manager at the civic association EQ Klub.

From 2001 to 2017, Čaputová served as a lawyer for Via Iuris, a civic organisation, and actively engaged in campaign planning with Greenpeace. Notably, she played a pivotal role in a decade-long campaign against a proposed toxic landfill in Pezinok, earning her the prestigious 2016 Goldman Environmental Prize. Her relentless efforts resulted in the landfill being declared illegal by the Supreme Court of Slovakia.

Political Activities

Entering the political arena in 2017, Čaputová became a founding member of the socially liberal Progressive Slovakia party. Serving as the party’s Deputy Chair until March 2019, she resigned to pursue her presidential candidacy.

In the 2019 Slovak presidential election, running as the Progressive Slovakia candidate, Čaputová secured victory in the run-off with over 58% of the vote, defeating opponent Maroš Šefčovič. She officially assumed the presidency on June 15, 2019, during a special session of the National Council in Bratislava.

Presidential Legacy and Achievements

Throughout her presidency, Čaputová consistently earned the trust of the Slovak people, rated as the most trusted politician in the country in 2020 and 2021. Her leadership gained international attention and respect.

Internationally, Čaputová is renowned for her commitment to environmental protection, particularly focusing on climate change mitigation. Pledging to end subsidies for coal and fossil fuels, she aimed to phase out coal mining and power generation by 2023, leading Slovakia to join the Powering Past Coal Alliance.

Personal Life and Recognition

Divorced with two daughters, Čaputová practices Zen yoga and maintained residence in Pezinok during her presidency. Her relentless environmental advocacy earned her the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2016. In 2019, she received the European Prize for Political Culture, recognising her contributions to European democracy.

Zuzana Čaputová’s presidency signifies the influence of environmental activism, justice, and progressivism in modern politics. Her legacy marks a pivotal moment in Slovakia’s political landscape.
