Sushma Swaraj, was born into a Punjabi Hindu Brahmin family to Hardev Sharma and Shrimati Laxmi Devi. She embarked on her educational journey at Sanatan Dharma College in Ambala Cantonment. She earned a bachelor’s degree with majors in Sanskrit and Political Science and pursued a law degree at Panjab University, Chandigarh. Notably, her oratory skills earned her the Best Hindi Speaker award for three consecutive years in a state-level competition.

Advocacy Career

Commencing her practice as an advocate in the Supreme Court of India in 1973, Sushma Swaraj actively participated in George Fernandes’s legal defence team in 1975, a pivotal moment in her career. Joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) marked her entry into politics, eventually becoming a national leader.

Early Political Career

Serving as a member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly, Sushma Swaraj won the Ambala Cantonment assembly seat at the age of 25. Holding various cabinet positions, she showcased leadership skills and commitment to public service. Her journey continued as she was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1990 and the 11th Lok Sabha in 1996.

Ministerial Roles

Sushma Swaraj’s career featured significant ministerial roles, including being the Union Cabinet Minister for Information and Broadcasting during Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s 13-day government in 1996. Notably, she became the first female Chief Minister of Delhi in 1998 and served as the Union Cabinet Minister for Information and Broadcasting with additional responsibility for the Ministry of Telecommunications.

Strong Opposition Leader

Transitioning to national leadership, she won the Vidisha constituency in Madhya Pradesh during the 15th Lok Sabha elections. As the Leader of the Opposition in the 15th Lok Sabha, she played a crucial role in the BJP’s victory in the 2014 Indian general election.

Minister of External Affairs

Sushma Swaraj’s tenure as the Minister of External Affairs from May 2014 to May 2019 marked a significant phase. Implementing India’s foreign policy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she played a pivotal role in addressing global issues and earned the title of “India’s best-loved politician.”

While her career was not without controversies, including the Lalit Modi travel visa incident, Sushma Swaraj faced criticisms with resilience.

Her journey was marked by distinctions and awards, making her the only female Member of Parliament (MP) honoured with the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award. Beyond India’s borders, she advocated for the recognition of the Roma community’s connection to India.

Personal Life and Legacy

Sushma Swaraj’s personal life intertwined with her political career. Married to Swaraj Kaushal, the couple had a daughter named Bansuri. Her untimely demise on August 6, 2019, led to a national outpouring of grief. Posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2020, her legacy endures as a testament to dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to India’s betterment.
