Rina Dhaka, an eminent figure in the Indian fashion realm, has etched an enduring legacy on the runway, reshaping the contours of contemporary fashion with a fusion of creativity, innovation, and a commitment to societal causes.

Early Life and Commencement

Rina Dhaka’s fashion journey originated with her graduation from the Government College for Girls in Chandigarh. The pivotal move to Delhi, propelled by her father’s insistence, marked the inception of her illustrious career. Enrolling in a fashion design course set the stage for her transformative foray into the world of fashion.

Commencing as an intern at Intercraft, a notable garment exporter, Dhaka honed her skills in textiles and clothing. Her stint at Rohit Khosla’s atelier provided the foundational knowledge needed to take her initial strides in the dynamic fashion industry.

Revolutionising Indian Fashion

Dhaka ascended to fashion prominence in the 1980s, but it was in the 1990s that her impact reverberated with groundbreaking designs, such as spandex churidars. Her fearless approach challenged traditional norms, ushering in an era of sartorial experimentation. In 2009, Dhaka, alongside a group of designers, delved into the creation of female beachwear, sparking a dialogue about fashion in India that transcended conventional boundaries.

Diverse Collaborations and Contributions

Rina Dhaka’s career is punctuated by diverse collaborations, showcasing her versatility. Noteworthy projects include a 2010 collection inspired by cobwebs featuring actress Lara Dutta and a 2012 venture into revamping aesthetics for Barista Lavazza. Her commitment to inclusive and sustainable fashion manifested in collaborations with a Plus Size Store and a maternity wear collection in 2019. In 2020, Dhaka’s partnership with sustainable manufacturer LIVA underscored her advocacy for eco-friendly fashion.

Global Recognition and Philanthropy

Celebrated globally, Rina Dhaka’s designs have adorned luminaries such as Naomi Campbell, Uma Thurman, and Lara Dutta. Her creations have graced prestigious institutions like The Louvre and The Metropolitan, firmly establishing her as a global fashion force.

Beyond fashion, Dhaka’s compassionate endeavours shine through. Collaborating with an NGO in Delhi, she ensures the distribution of rations to the less fortunate. As a Buddhist practitioner, she intertwines Buddhist principles into her interactions, fostering empathy and understanding.

Awards and Honors

Rina Dhaka’s impact on fashion and social causes has garnered a myriad of accolades. From the Yuva Ratan Award in 1993 to the Best Designer award at Miami Fashion Week in 2004, her innovative designs and entrepreneurial spirit have earned recognition. In 2014, she was honoured as the Best Women Entrepreneur by the Delhi state government, and in 2017, the Rajiv Gandhi Excellence Award celebrated her contributions.

A fervent advocate for ethical fashion and animal welfare, Dhaka serves as an ambassador for PETA India, championing laws against animal cruelty.
