Born on September 28, 1929, in Indore, British India, Lata Mangeshkar emerged from a family deeply rooted in musical tradition. With her father, Deenanath Mangeshkar, a classical singer and theatre actor, and her musically inclined mother, Shevanti, Lata’s formative years were steeped in classical music and theatrical influences, laying the foundation for her illustrious career.

Lata Mangeshkar’s entry into playback singing commenced with the Marathi film “Kiti Hasaal” (1942). However, it was her soul-stirring rendition of “Aayega Aanewaala” from “Mahal” (1949) that propelled her into stardom. Composed by Khemchand Prakash, the song not only became an instant hit but also marked the genesis of Lata Mangeshkar’s enduring impact on the music industry.

In recognition of her monumental contributions, Lata Mangeshkar was honoured with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 2001. Her prolific career earned her a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most recorded songs by a female playback singer.

Maintaining a private personal life, Lata Mangeshkar dedicated herself entirely to her craft, choosing not to marry. Her siblings, including Asha Bhosle, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, and Usha Mangeshkar, also made significant contributions to the music industry. Lata’s legacy surpasses her individual achievements, as she became a mentor and inspiration to countless aspiring singers, shaping the musical landscape for generations.

Lata Mangeshkar passed away on February 6, 2022. At the time of her demise, her net worth was reported to be 368 Crore Indian rupees.
