Rajat Sharma, born on 18 February 1957, is a prominent figure in Indian journalism and the business world, currently serving as the Chairman and Editor-in-chief of India TV. Renowned for his influential show, Aap Ki Adalat, where he conducts interviews with politicians and celebrities in a courtroom-like setting, Sharma has made an enduring impact on the Indian media landscape.

Early Life and Education

Rajat Sharma originates from Sabzi Mandi, Delhi, born into a Brahmin family. Growing up amidst six brothers and a sister, he attended Ramjas School for his schooling. His pursuit of higher education led him to the esteemed Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), where he actively engaged in student politics as a member of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad. In 1977, he ascended to the position of General Secretary in the Delhi University Students Union.

In 1997, Rajat Sharma embarked on a new chapter in his personal life by marrying Ritu Dhawan.

Career Journey

Equipped with a Master’s degree in Commerce, Sharma entered the realm of journalism as a researcher under the mentorship of Janardan Thakur. He swiftly ascended the ranks, commencing his journey at Onlooker Magazine as a trainee and eventually assuming the role of its editor in 1985. His journalistic acumen continued to shine as he took on editorial responsibilities at Sunday Observer and The Daily.

The pivotal moment in his career materialised in 1992 when he serendipitously encountered Subhash Chandra, the founder of Zee TV, during a flight to Delhi. This happenstance led to the inception of Aap Ki Adalat. The inaugural episode, featuring Lalu Yadav, the former Chief Minister of Bihar, aired in 1993. The show has since become a television sensation, marking 21 years of broadcast and earning the distinction of being the longest-running show in India’s television history. With over 750 guests interviewed, Sharma has brought a distinctive blend of interrogation and courtroom drama to the Indian audience.

In addition to Aap Ki Adalat, Rajat Sharma hosts the prime-time show Aaj Ki Baat on India TV, further solidifying his influence in the media landscape.

Beyond his media endeavours, Rajat Sharma assumed the presidency of the Delhi Cricket Association, albeit briefly. Citing corruption and external pressures, he resigned from the position after just one month.
